Another Win on the Road for Glasgow
20/05/11
Radcar v Glasgow Meeting Report

Another good team performance from Glasgow saw them come away with a hard fought 2 point win from Redcar.

In the early stages in particular it was not the best of meetings with the track being very bare and dusty making gating important. The Tigers pairing certainly had their gating shoes on in the opening heat and after Juul had been excluded for trying to anticipate the start for the home side, Joe and Theo were fastest to trap and that was that.

After a false start, Nick and Michal looked as if they might repeat the score in heat 2 but Michal went too far wide in the dust allowing Juul to slip through and split the Tigers pair. It looked as if the home side's Matej Kus might have had bike problems causing him to crash heavily in heat 3, apparently picking up a stomach knock in the process. The subsequent re run perhaps highlighted the poor state of the track at this time as although James Grieves was quickest to gate, Havelock looked quicker out on track but was unable to find a passing line and Tigers recorded a heat advantage.

Bears got their first heat win in heat 4, Summers being the quickest out of the trap but with the Tigers gating right behind him the points were shared. They followed it up with a big 5-1 in heat 5 with Kus and Havelock perhaps surprisingly outgating Screen and Pijper. Joe was all over the back of Havelock for all four laps looking for a passing line but none was to be found.

The first pass of the night came in heat 6 and unfortunately a Glasgow rider was on the receiving end. Josh and Nick had gated but Jason Lyons found that elusive line outside Nick who was keeping tight to the inside. Lyons managed to edge ahead of him on the third lap to split the Tigers pairing but was never any real threat to Josh.

It was back to from the gate in heat 7 although Aaron Summers not only outgated the Glasgow pairing but won the race comfortably. With his partner branford off 15m for a previous tapes offence, the spoils were shared.

There was more bad luck for Nick Morris in heat 8 when he suffered a puncture on the third lap whilst leading. With Kus having rounded Theo Pijper on the previous lap it gave the home side a heat advantage.

The track was at last beginning to settle down, the addition of watering having helped considerably. It didn't stop Josh winning from the gate in heat 9 however after a good gate and another classy ride. However the extra grip on the track gave both Kus and Havelock the lines they needed on laps three and four respectively to get past Nick Morris and another heat was shared.

Suddenly however the home side were right back in it with a 5-1 from the gate in heat 10 with former Tigers Lyons and Juul leading Grieves home leaving the scores tied as they headed into an interval.

After the interval, the action kicked off with an excellent battle between Aaron Summers and Joe Screen in heat 11 with the home rider just getting the advantage off the final bend as he found the drive on the outside line to ensure he pipped Joe to the win and with Theo in third the scores remained tied.

Heats 12 and 13 were also shared, Nick and James filling in the minor placing's behind Kus in the former whilst Joe and Josh followed Summers home in the latter.

Not for the first time this season, heat 14 was a big one for the Tigers and they managed to edge ahead overall in the meeting thanks to a heat advantage. Tigers had gated on a 5-1 and held that until the third lap when an aggressive but fair move by Havelock saw him squeeze through past Nick Morris. However James Grieves was equal to the challenges Havelock tried to make on the final lap and held on for the hat win. With Nick easily retaining third, it gave the Tigers an advantage going into the crucial heat 15.

Josh and Joe lined up at the tapes against Matej Kus and Aaron Summers, both of whom had looked very quick both out of the gate and during the previous few heats. When the tapes went up it was the Tigers pair who hit the front and on the tough opening bends they combined to squeeze out Aaron Summers, Joe then settling in behind Josh. The race that followed showed just how important team work can be in speedway as although Josh rightfully was hailed as race winner, Joe Screen rode an excellent race to hold off both Bears riders, slowing them up. Although Kus finally managed to get by Joe on the third lap and Summers one lap later it was to no avail as Josh was well enough clear to hold on for the heat win ensuring Glasgow won the meeting overall.
