James moved away from Glasgow for 2007, joining Sheffield, a club nearer his home base and a track he has always listed as his favourite.

Although he started the season in the main body of the team, he dropped to reserve at the first greensheets and remained there for the rest of the season. Unfortunately he was unable to achieve his aim of upping his average, instead it dropped slightly.

James was quickly snapped up for 2007 by Mildenhall, a club he had nearly joined instead of Sheffield the year before, the Fen Tigers finding his 3.65 team building average appealing.

After coming in to the Glasgow side at the end of 2004, James became a Glasgow asset in 2005 and rode a further two full seasons for the Tigers, mostly at reserve. He benefited from riding mostly with Shane Parker in 2005 and steadily improved under the captains guidance. However despite a full season at reserve in 2006, James did not progress as much as expected, his average only increasing slightly and there appeared to be a little friction with more experienced riders frustrated at a reported unwillingness to listen to the advice of others. It was therefore no great surprise when James moved away in 2007 although he does remain popular amongst many of the support and did guest for the Tigers last season against Berwick, scoring 3+1 from 5.

Outside speedway, James was also a decent football player and was at one time on the books at Tottenham Hotspur at a junior level .
