Willie Templeton
(Posted 17/08/08)
Sadly it has been reported that former Tiger Willie Templeton passed away yesterday after a battle with cancer.
Willie was a popular Tigers stalwart in the 60's and early 70's. He originally joined Glasgow in 1954 whilst Tigers were at White City but it was to be a short association as Glasgow were only to ride 6 meetings that season before the plug was pulled. He returned to Glasgow - from Edinburgh - in 1965 and was instantly a revelation for the Tigers especially in the early meetings.
Although never a top averaging rider, Willie was the solid team man that every club yearns for, very dependable and popular. He took over the captaincy of the Tigers from Maury Mattingly mid '67 and when Glasgow moved to Hampden in 1969 he recorded a paid win behind team mate Charlie Monk in the opening heat.
Willie remained true to his Fife roots and although he had a reputation as one not to be messed with on track, he was a quiet and unassuming man away from speedway. He will be fondly remembered by those who saw him race and will always have his place in the history of Glasgow Tigers.
Our condolences to Willie's family and friends.
